How to Copy the Best Beauty Looks from the Oscars

1. Get Viola Davis’s metallic eye makeup

The Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom nominee stunned in a white Alexander McQueen gown, with elegant makeup to enhance her look.

“Viola’s dress is always my inspiration for the look,” said her makeup artist, Autumn Moultrie. “We wanted the look to be soft and sophisticated, but also dramatic. That’s why I went with a soft lip but a dramatic bold and metallic eye.”

Step 1: To prep the skin, Moultrie applied the new L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Midnight Serum to instantly moisturize her face and give her a glow.

Step 2: Next, Moultrie used L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Serum Foundation SPF 50 in Mahogany. For a touch of extra coverage and to ensure her makeup stayed in place all night, she set the foundation with L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Creamy Powder Foundation in Sienna under Davis’s eyes, on the bridge of her nose, in the center of her forehead and in the center of her chin. Moultrie used shade Espresso everywhere else.

Step 3: For the eyes, Moultrie went for a bold, dark look using L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Satin Glide Eyeliner in Black followed by L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara and L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Magnifying Pencil on the brows.

Step 4: For the final touch, lips were lined with L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Anti Feathering Lipliner in Cranberry, and she filled in the rest of the lips with shade Bold Orchid.

2. Get Margot Robbie’s effortless ponytail

“I was inspired by the beautiful simplicity of her Chanel gown and wanted to pair it with a fresh effortless ponytail,” says celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett.

Step 1: On wet hair, start by applying the new ghd Body Goals Total Volume Foam to the roots, for 24 hours of flawless volume hold. Next, apply the new ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray throughout the hair to guard it from heat damage and ensure smooth results.

Step 2: Blow dry the hair using the ghd Ceramic Vented Radial Brush in size 3 and the ghd Helios Professional Hair Dryer, lifting the roots and focusing on a smooth finish with lots of body.

Step 3: Once the hair is dry, wave the entire head using the new limited-edition ghd 20th Anniversary Platinum+ Styler in two-inch sections. Using the styler’s rounded edges, bend into the hair back and forth creating a soft, effortless looking wave.

Step 4: Tease the crown of the hair and gather into a low ponytail, pulling out soft pieces around the face, fluffing the ponytail up with your hands for added volume.

3. Get Andra Day’s luminous lips

“For tonight’s Oscar look, I wanted Andra’s makeup to emit an otherworldly goddess-like glow,” said makeup artist Porsche Cooper. “I went with an all gold haute glam using Chanel colors in gilded and bronze tones.” Those tones complemented the United States vs. Billie Holiday nominee’s gilded Vera Wang dress.

Step 1: “For lips that shine with an ethereal effect, I first applied Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres in Nude Brun for contour, and then smoothed on Chanel Rouge Coco Bloom in Dream for a high shine finish,” Cooper said.

Step 2: For an added touch of glamour, Cooper layered lips with Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in Excitation.

4. Get Carey Mulligan’s gold reverse French manicure

Carey Mulligan went for the gold at the 2021 Academy Awards. Nominated for best actress for Promising Young Woman, Mulligan wore a show stopping two-piece Valentino gown, with a gold mani to match. The gold micro reverse French manicure was created by Queenie Nguyen.

Step 1: Prep the nails to be ready for polish, including using nail polish remover for a clean slate.

Step 2: Choose a solid, natural base polish color to let the gold accent nail art shine, like OPI Samoan Sand. Evenly apply two coats of Samoan Sand and let the nails dry for at least 10 minutes before adding the gold accent.

Step 3: Use a thin striping brush to add the micro gold accent nail art. Create a thin micro French in OPI Glitzerland following the cuticle area, hugging the nail bed on all the nails.

Step 4: Use the striping brush to add a very thin layer of OPI This Changes Everything to add more definition to the reverse gold micro French. It is important to only add a very subtle layer of this color to avoid being too glittery as a result.

Step 5: Wait for the nail art to dry for 15 minutes before adding the top coat to avoid dragging the gold nail art shimmer across the solid base color.

5. Get Amanda Seyfried’s radiant makeup

“The glorious red tulle of Amanda’s Armani gown, with its combination of classic and modern architecture, inspired me to use a bold, complementary color on her lips, while choosing warm colors and bright highlights on her eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist Genevieve Herr, who worked with Lancôme ambassadress Amanda Seyfried, nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Mank.

SKIN:

Step 1: Seyfried used the new Lancôme Clarifique Face Essence the night before and morning of on her face and neck to deeply moisturize and smooth her skin’s texture, delivering radiance.

Step 2: Next, the Lancôme Advanced Genifique Serum created a smooth canvas for makeup application and hydrated her skin.

Step 3: For the final prep step, Herr applied Lancôme Prep & Hydrate Primer all over Seyfried’s face for a flawless finish for all night staying power.

FACE:

Step 1: Herr applied Lancôme Teint Miracle Radiant Foundation with a damp sponge and used a lighter shade of the Teint Idôle Ultra Makeup Stick as concealer where needed.

Step 2: She then shaded and contoured Seyfried’s cheekbones, jawline and nose with a darker shade of the new Lancôme Teint Idôle Ultra Makeup Stick and blended with the built-in kabuki brush.

Step 3: To highlight the cheekbones, she applied Lancôme Dual Finish Highlighter in Luminous Gold on the high points of the face where the light would naturally hit for an all over glow.

Step 4: Genevieve used a touch of Lancôme Blush Subtil in Blushing Tresor on her fingers and blended it on the apples of the cheeks for a hint of color.

EYES:

Step 1: Herr lined Seyfried’s upper lash line with Lancôme Le Crayon Khol in Black Coffee, taking it from the inner corner to the outer edge, softening the line to create a subtle smokey effect.

Step 2: To set the line, she used shade #5 (dark brown) from the Lancôme Hypnôse 5-Color Eyeshadow Palette in Rose Fusion and blended it across the lash line.

Step 3: On the lids, she added shade #3 (cranberry shimmer) from the palette for a rose flush.

Step 4: Next, Herr curled Seyfried’s lashes with Lancôme Le Curler and started with Lancôme Dèfinicils High Definition Lengthening Mascara and re-coated the lashes with Lancôme Monsieur Big Volumizing Mascara for added drama on the red carpet.

LIPS:

Step 1: To finish the look, Herr lined Seyfried’s lips with Lancôme Le Lip Liner in Rose Lancôme and then applied Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink in #481 (launching in May) for a pop of color.

6. Get Renée Zellweger’s flawless complexion

When best actor presenter Renée Zellweger took the stage in her Giorgio Armani Privé pink strapless silk gown, she was glowing in every way.

Celebrity makeup artist Dana Michelle Hamel prepared her skin for her lit-from-within look that stole the spotlight. Hamel used the Pause Well-Aging Fascia Stimulating Tool, along with La Mer skincare products, to “help hydration, improve blood ﬂow, support cell turnover, remove waste, boost collagen production, and optimize overall skin nutrition,” she says.

Step 1: “The Pause Well-Aging Fascia Stimulating Tool is a in a class of its own,” Hamel said. “It’s an FDA-cleared Class 1 medical device, engineered to stimulate fibroblasts, which are collagen-producing cells within the fascia connective tissue.” Hamel first applied La Mer Moisturizer to Zellweger’s face and neck for hydration and to provide a smooth glide with the Pause Well-Aging Fascia Stimulating Tool. “With light pressure, I used a combination of long, slow strokes and fast, short, strokes in a multiple of directions to help stimulate blood flow,” Hamel says.

Step 2: Hamel finished the treatment with La Mer The Concentrate Serum, La Mer The Treatment Lotion, and La Mer The Lip Volumizer. “The whole treatment takes approximately five minutes—and it’s the best five minutes you’ll ever give your skin,” says Hamel.
